Now a house-hold name, many of us have grown up with the beloved tales of Beatrix Potter for generations. With a pure gift to create amazing and whimsical characters through just observing an array of cuddly woodland creatures, Beatrix Potters tales aren't just enjoyed by children, but offer a sense of nostalgia every time we hear the name Peter Rabbit. However becoming a famous published author wasn't one of the easiest tasks to achieve in the 1900s.

Peter RabbitStarting from humble beginnings in London, Beatrix and her brother Walter were brought up with a love of the countryside and the animals that inhabited it. Caring for a small number of pets, the family would typically holiday away in Scotland and the Lake District, inspiring the great British landscape that appears in many of her books. Educated by a governess until the age of 18, Beatrix Potter grew up to love illustration and the natural sciences and even wrote papers, although these were difficult to get read due to her gender. Finally through a dear family friend and her governess, Beatrix was convinced to create a book for family and friends staring four little rabbits, Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail and Peter.

Flopsy Rabbit

After a huge success, the determined writer submitted one of her first children's books, The Tale of Peter Rabbit to publishers over six times until it was finally accepted. What was to follow was a series of beautifully written and illustrated adventures involving such names as Squirrel Nutkin, Benjamin Button and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. Adorned with human characteristics and a sense for fashion, Beatrix Potter's characters all had a certain value that people could relate to and still do to this day. Now over a hundred years later the world of Beatrix Potter is available in the form of cuddly toys, photo frames and gifts that truly make any occasion extra special.
